The 8 Coolest Fall Marathons to Try Out
There are so many marathons all around the world you can add to your bucket list! To enjoy the cool fall weather and awesome themes and running locations, check out these eight amazing marathons:
Now, who wouldn’t want to join this famous marathon and run all around New York? This is the biggest marathon across the United States, both in terms of spectators and participants! Plus, this is the BIGGEST city of the United States you’ll be running on!
You’ll be touring around New York City, running over five bridges and boroughs. Expect to hear a LOT of people cheering you on. It’s happening this November 3 but takes note, it gets tougher to get in this marathon as each year passes.
2. The Boring Marathon
Don’t be fooled by the name of the marathon and the types of marathons under it! These are one of the most fun races in a town that’s happened to be named Boring, in Ore! You’ll be running through a flat and paved pathway around Springwater Trail, as well as roads with NO traffic whatsoever.
Choose between half-Boring Half Marathon, Really Boring Relay, and Constantly Boring 8K. Be all smiles while doing it, and reach your goal here for the Boston Marathon. Yes, it’s a Boston qualifier!
3. Freedom’s Run Marathon
This marathon is held in Shepherdstown, usually in October. What’s great about this marathon is that it makes sure to promote both history and health. You’ll be running through three historical natural parks, which are the:
- Harpers Ferry in Chesapeake
- Ohio Canal
- Antietam National Battlefield
The current race director is a doctor who makes this sport for health the main focus in his career! This marathon would benefit the Eastern Area Health Education Center, giving out both fitness and health grants, as well as to promote awareness of childhood obesity. A great cause!
4. Steamtown Marathon
A lot of people will love the Steamtown Marathon, which isn’t as popular as this around New York, Las Vegas, or Chicago. However, because it isn’t as huge, expect it to be more spacious, easy to join, AND still have the beautiful scenery! This smallish race is located in a beautiful and quaint town with a ton of history.
One thing that makes this a fun race is that there’s a fun downhill course, where you’ll be passing through 14 communities that live along Lackawanna River. It will be a sight to see!
5. Mt. Desert Island Marathon
If you’re focusing more on beautiful scenery as you run, then you HAVE to enter the Mt. Desert Island Marathon! It’s known as one of the most scenic marathons across the United States because of the forests, lakes, villages, and the ocean coast you’ll be viewing as you run.
You’ll be running everywhere, from the hilly courses of harbors down to the coast of Maine. While it’s very challenging, you’ll be rewarded with amazing views no matter how fast or slow you go.
6. Moab Trail Marathon
Another marathon with amazing scenery goes out to the Moab Trail Marathon, located in eastern Utah. You’ll be running on red rock terrain, going around single track trails and their red dirt roads. Besides that, you’re passing through narrow canyons and the sandy washes, all with the beautiful view of the classic red rocks and Slickrock terrains.
It’s very adventurous and made for the mountain lovers. Choose between a full marathon, a 5K, or even a Kids K!
7. The North Face Endurance Challenge
If you’re up for the challenge and feel like you can take on one of the toughest marathons, try the North Face Endurance Challenge. You’ll be competing with some of the world’s best runners, as this is a top-tier event with a ton of tough terrain but scenic views.
You’ll be running through extremely hilly courses, all uphill and requires a lot of endurance (hence the name). The medal and fact you finished it is rewarding enough!
8. California International Marathon
This is held right before the fall season ends, so if you want to squeeze in a nice marathon before the year ends, I recommend this one.
However, you’ll need to learn and expect to run downhill for a LONG time. It seems easy, but you have to practice and train to prevent blowing your quads. Since it’s downhill, try training and aiming to reach a record!
